Masterpiece Coffee is the work of founder and roaster Young Sun, who set out to introduce coffee drinkers to an origin most have never tasted: China. After spending a decade in the Bay Area coffee scene, Young spent years searching for Chinese coffees worthy of the cup. When specialty-grade beans from Yunnan finally became available stateside, he fast-tracked his vision, opening Masterpiece in Berkeley in late 2024.

Partnering with close friends, Young travels to origin every year to source directly from the producers and farmers behind each lot. Back in the Bay, the beans are roasted in small batches, to reveal the unique character of every harvest, from the clarity of bright fruit to a rich, full body sweetness. Young's philosophy is rooted in the Japanese ideal of “ichi-go ichi-e” — one moment, one encounter — and the shokunin spirit of relentless craftsmanship. The result is a singular slow bar where Chinese-grown coffee shares the menu with signature drinks drawn from across Asian cuisine, each cup made with the care and intention of a true original.
