Noumenon Coffee is a roasting project built around a love of coffee, and more specifically a love of the producers and the work already in the beans. The roast is meant to leave as little of itself behind as possible. Noumenon roasts as light as they believe a coffee can honestly go, so the cup still belongs to the producer.

The other commitment is to the ritual of coffee, which only works if the person buying it can see the whole thing. Noumenon publishes costs, sourcing, suggested brewing parameters, and the reasoning behind what gets bought. Green coffee is bought directly from the producer when that is possible, and when it comes through an importer the importer has to be reputable and the supply chain has to be transparent. The hope is that someone buying the coffee can approach it in its totality, which is the opposite of C-market coffee, where the conditions that made the finished drink possible (the seasonally flavored shaken espresso from a major chain, for instance) sit behind a sea of corporate mist.

The name is doing that work on purpose. A particular cup can feel like a private pleasure, something that begins and ends with the person drinking it, and Noumenon exists because that feeling leaves out the world the cup depends on. The producer, the price, the roast, and the conditions of freedom and dignity that make this particular coffee possible are part of the cup, and they are something a person who cares about coffee can look at and shape.
