ABOUT THIS COFFEE AND PRODUCER
Alo Coffee was born from a dream—and a leap of faith. For years, former university teacher and electrical engineer Tamiru worked in coffee, witnessing firsthand the challenges of an industry where quality was often overlooked and producers were struggling. Despite his experience, the frustrations of unfair pricing and undervalued labor left him hesitant to start his own venture. That changed in 2020, when Ethiopia held its first-ever Cup of Excellence (CoE) competition, a revelation that proved exceptional coffee could be celebrated and rewarded. Together with his wife, Messi, Tamiru set out with a singular mission: to prove that Sidama’s finest coffees could stand among the world’s best. In 2021, against all odds, their very first submission—a meticulously processed lot from their home village of Alo in Bensa—won Ethiopia’s Cup of Excellence, cementing their belief that dedication, not just tradition, shapes greatness. We are grateful to have such a close working relationship with Tamiru and are proud to share another great coffee from him and his team at Alo Coffee.
This is our second coffee from Alo Coffee’s West Arsi Nensebo washing stations. The classic Natural Ethiopian flavor profile of berries and tea is present in the cup, but with a refined cleanliness that Tamiru has become so well known for. This coffee truly shows the elegance in simplicity of Tamiru and the Alo Coffee Team’s natural coffee processing methods and we can’t wait to share it with you.
WHY WE SELECTED THIS COFFEE
We’re excited to welcome back another beautiful lot from West Arsi, sourced from our friends at Alo Coffee. This natural process coffee leans softer and sweeter than you might expect, offering a blueberry driven profile that is noticeably cleaner than typical naturals. The cup opens with berries that bounce between blue and purple, while a prominent sweet tangerine note still manages to shine through.
What truly sets this lot apart is the finish. It is long, refined, and reminiscent of white tea, adding a layer of complexity and elegance that lingers well after each sip. This is a very well executed natural fermentation that feels balanced, intentional, and expressive. A coffee like this is really a timeless classic.
