ABOUT THIS COFFEE AND PRODUCER
When Doris Tuiyott acquired Little Swamps in 2019, she inherited flat fields once exhausted by wheat and barley. Despite this, she saw the potential to restore the land through coffee. A government program in 2021 brought her Batian seedlings and technical support, but it was Doris’ vision and discipline that transformed the farm. She tested soils, lowered acidity, and invested in organics. Doris refused pesticides and chemicals, instead drawing irrigation water from the nutrient-rich swamps that give the estate its unique name.
Doris has decided to do something truly unique in the landscape of Kenyan coffee production. For this lot, the cherries are only of the Batian varietal—a varietal normally used in farm field blends. This unique decision and a simple processing style allow the characteristics of Batian to shine through. The cherries are first pulped and floated for consistency, then left in bins overnight. After this they are washed and skin dried for 24 hours before being finished on raised beds for about 6 days.
WHY WE SELECTED THIS COFFEE
This is our most exciting Kenyan release to date, and one we’ve been eager to share. For the first time, we’re working with Doris Tuiyott of Little Swamps Estate, and the result is a coffee that feels genuinely rare in today’s landscape of Kenyan offerings.
This lot stands apart as the most traceable coffee we’ve ever released from Kenya, a pure Batian varietal. Finding a separated Batian like this is incredibly difficult, which makes this release a truly special experience and a rare window into the variety's unique potential when grown well.
In the cup, this coffee sets itself apart from most Kenyan profiles. Rather than leaning on the familiar, it offers a distinctly unique expression that immediately caught our attention. The profile is our favorite Kenyan we’ve tasted to date, showcasing remarkable clarity and an uncommon sense of balance and complexity. The first impression is immediate and striking, a classic, well defined red grapefruit note that nods to the region.
From there, the cup moves in an unexpected direction, opening into vibrant tropical flavors reminiscent of ripe mango, delivered with exceptional cleanliness. As the coffee cools, red cherry notes become more prominent, adding depth and sweetness, while wild floral aromatics emerge in the finish, evoking fresh roses and lingering elegantly on the palate.
This is a truly magical Kenyan coffee, expressive and refined in a way that feels entirely its own. It is an excellent choice for those seeking high clarity, clean Kenyan coffees with a unique perspective, and one that even the deepest coffee enthusiasts will find rewarding.
