ABOUT THIS COFFEE AND PRODUCER

Carmen Montoya has been cultivating coffee for the past 23 years. Since childhood, her parents instilled in her a love for the art of growing coffee. When she was given an opportunity to own a farm, she started with a plot of a completely unknown regional variety. Carmen put all her effort into producing the best coffee with the plot she was given and eventually went on to win the 2014 Cup of Excellence with the unknown variety. She affectionately named it “chiroso”.

WHY WE SELECTED THIS COFFEE

We're happy to be working with Carmen Montoya of Los Pinos for a second year, bringing back her washed Chiroso. We really enjoyed last year's harvest, and this latest lot offers a slightly different expression with a juicier and more distinct profile.

The first sip brings a complex goji berry sweetness, with a rich fruit character that carries through the cup. A sparkling apple cider quality develops alongside it, adding a juicy acidity that makes the coffee feel especially lively.

As it cools, subtle herbal notes reminiscent of juniper begin to emerge. This gentle herbality is one of the qualities we particularly enjoy in Chiroso, adding another dimension to the fruit without taking away from its sweetness.

It's exciting to see how Carmen's harvest has developed from last year, while retaining the distinctive character that made us enjoy her Chiroso in the first place.
